Judo
Why Judo
There are many reasons to practice judo, not just fitness and self-defence. Judo develops confidence, improves balance, helps with coordination and overall well-being.
Judo is a Japanese sport established in 1882 by Jigorō Kanō. The term judo translates as ‘the gentle way‘. The modern sport can trace its origins back to the martial art of Ju Jitsu ‘the gentle art’.
By practicing Judo you will develop throwing and grappling skills, learn how to fall safely and, just as important, have fun doing it. The sport has a non-competitive grading system administered by the governing body, JudoScotland, which allows players to progress toward the coveted black belt.

As with all martial arts Judo has at its core a set of moral values
- Politeness
- Courage
- Sincerity
- Self-Control
- Honour
- Modesty
- Friendship
- Respect
As many of the skills in Judo are transferable, athletes from other sports such as football, rugby and swimming, use it as a supplement to their primary sport.
